Spring is traditionally thought of as the season of renewal and often paired with the element of wood, having to do with the liver. In this season, we rejoice the longer days, the time of vision and growth after a period of deep introspection in winter. We gather hope and envision renewal as new life pushes through the earth. Springtime is often associated with themes of potential and new growth. It is a time when the seeds of change that we planted and put intention towards in the winter begin to germinate, as the ground begins to unfreeze.

But for some of us, spring may bring a certain fear with it. Will we be able to enjoy the outdoors? Or will we be stuck inside feeling sniffly and drowsy from antihistamines? Forget worrying about monitoring the pollen report on a beautiful spring day and use organic Reishi mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum) to support allergies and reduce inflammation!

Check out this blog post to learn all about Reishi -- its properties, uses and potential side effects!

Science of the Histamine Response

Let’s dive deeper into the science behind seasonal allergies. When a piece of pollen or other allergen enters the system, the T-cells have the job of cleaning up and disposing of the invader, as well as stimulating the inflammatory response, so the white blood cells can move easily towards the site of infection. Sometimes the immune response does not quickly capture and flush the pollen out of the system, and the body will continue to push the immune facilitation response, releasing more histamine.

Histamine is released by the cells, stimulating the inflammatory response, contracting the smooth muscle and dilating the capillaries. Acute inflammation is a sign that the immune system is doing its job, protecting and healing our bodies from invaders. Whereas, chronic inflammation, where histamine is being released too often, can often be correlated with auto-immune disorders, like allergies and asthma.

Antihistamines

We’ve all seen the allergy commercials, where someone is outside on a beautiful spring day, amidst the blooming flowers with a smile on their face. The narrator is talking about an antihistamine drug giving them the happiest spring, and then quickly lists off ten or so possible side effects. Often times, we are instructed to take these OTC antihistamine drugs, like Benadryl, Allegra, or Claritin, for seasonal allergies and asthmatic responses. An antihistamine is a drug which reduces or blocks histamines, so they lessen allergy symptoms.

Common treatments like antihistamines can make you drowsy, among other side effects, and unable to enjoy the new spring energy. Studies have shown that organic Reishi mushroom has allergy-fighting potential, supporting these allergies without causing the negative side effects like the synthetic pharmaceuticals.

Organic Reishi Mushroom

Reishi is a supportive mushroom that has been found to promote healthy immune system function by supporting homeostasis. Reishi is typically known for its bitter taste caused by the terpenoid constituents, which support a normal inflammatory response. Scientific studies have shown Reishi’s triterpenes inhibit the release of histamine, thus reducing allergic reactions and inflammations. Reishi mushroom has been shown to support healthy oxygen flow, which is key to supporting healthy allergy response.*
